Abstract: Objective:To evaluate the nutritional status of children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) and the content of 11 minerals in serum.
Methods:126 children who were diagnosed with ASD in Shenyang Children's Hospital from January to December,2019 were selected as the ASD group, and another 200 children who were examined in the Child Healthcare Department of Shenyang Children's Hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. The contents of calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, copper, manganese, lithium, cobalt, nickel and mercury in serum were determined by Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS).
Results:The incidence of low body weight in ASD group was (8.7%, 11/126), higher than that in control group (2.5%, 5/200),and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Serum zinc/copper,selenium and lithium in ASD group were lower than those in control group, while copper, manganese and mercury were higher than the control group(P<0.01).
Conclusion:ASD children have deficiency of trace elements lithium and selenium, and excess of heavy metals copper and mercury. Clinicians should pay attention to the balance of minerals in ASD children, and provide dietary intervention and nutrition guidance to ASD children.
