Abstract: Objective To evaluate the association between abnormal levels of maternal serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin(hCG) in the first trimester and adverse pregnancy outcome. Methods Maternal serum concentration of β-human chorionic gonadotropin was measured in pregnant women from 11 to 13 weeks 6 days of gestation by timeresolved immunofluorometric assay. The association between the abnormal level of serum β-hCG in the first and second trimester and the pregnancy outcome was analyzed. Results Among all the adverse pregnancy outcomes, the women with GDM,preterm, low birth weight or fetal growth restriction had lower β-hCG levels than those with normal outcome. In the 454 pregnant women whose β-hCG level was less than the fifth percentile of normal outcome women, the incidence of pregnancy hypertension, fetal growth restriction, spontaneous abortion and low birth weight was significantly higher. What′s more, the incidence of adverse outcome also significantly increased when β-hCG level elevated both in first and second trimester. Conclusion There is association between increased frequency of adverse outcomes, such as GDM,preterm, low birth weight and fetal growth restriction, and low maternal serum βhCG levels in the first trimester.
