Effect of motor imagery therapy on the upper limb function of patients with hemiplegic cerebral palsy

Abstract:
Objective:To study the effect of motor imagery(MI) therapy on the upper limb function of in patients with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.
Methods:Twenty cases of hemiplegic cerebral palsy were randomly divided into the observation group and the control group,10 cases in each group.The observation group was given motor imagery therapy and routine rehabilitation training,while the patients in control group were treated with routine rehabilitation training.Before treatment and 10 weeks after treatment the scores were made on upper limb Peabody developmental scale,children′s functional independence rating(WeeFIM),thickness of the biceps brachii and supination of the forearm angle.Observe the effect of motor imagery therapy on the function of upper limb of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.
Results:After 10 weeks of treatment,hemiplegic limb Peabody fine motor score, children′s functional independence score, thickness of the biceps brachii, fore arm supination angles were increased in both groups(P<005);in observation group,Peabody fine motor score, children′s Functional Independence score,biceps brachii muscle thickness and fore arm supination angles were higher than those of the control group,the difference being statistically significant (P<005).Peabody fine motor score and biceps brachii muscle thickness had positive correlation(r=078, P<005).
Conclusion:Motor imagery therapy helps to improve the upper limb motor function in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, and can increase the angle of forearm rotation and muscle thickness.
